Dear First-timer,

There are so many moving parts in planning a retrenchment. It really depends on the scale and speed of your corporate restructuring. I’d really recommend being extremely detailed in your planning. Here are some things to look out for:

  1. Get trained. If you’re unsure about the entire process, ask your Mentors or expert for advice. Ensure your Line Managers are trained on how to conduct a Notification Meeting.

  2. Assign roles. Be clear about who does what. It’s the Line Managers who should convey the news to the impacted employees. HR provides support and information. Engage external consultants if possible.

  3. Plan dates and times. Ensure that the notifications do not happen during a holiday or celebratory season. Also do not conduct notifications at the end of the workweek so that the affected employees can still seek clarification.

  4. Ensure appropriate Messaging. Convey to the impacted Employee that the company has considered all options, made difficult business decisions, and has lined up programs to support them in their job search.

There are many more variables involved, of course. Do not forget to look after yourself. This is a very emotional journey, so don’t go it alone.
