Retrenchment horror stories #2: In the midst of a retrenchment exercise, the fire alarm went off as part of a regular fire drill.
As the affected employees stared at the line managers, the shrill sound of the fire alarm and announcements added to the tension and awkwardness of the situation. To make things worse, the office building management sounded the doorbell several times to check on the company's lack of participation.
The retrenchment exercise proceeded after the fire drill. The lesson learned is to check that other external activities do not coincide with a crucial company event, i.e. a retrenchment exercise. What would you do if you were the line manager in that scenario?
