Q: Dear Adrian,
I'm 39 this year and am an Engineer in the manufacturing industry and I'm considering a career switch. How should I go about it? - John
39 is actually a good age to pivot into a different industry because (a) you still have a long runway ahead, and (b) you probably aren't too expensive yet.
Mid-career switches aren't always easy, but it all starts with having around where you'd like to head, based on your Superpowers and Passions, and developing a around that.
1. You have to know what you're good at and who's going to hire you based on that.
Which other industries would be keen on your skills? Know where to channel your job search efforts towards.
2. Are you well networked in that area?
Do you know the hiring managers or decision-makers? Do they know you? What is your positioning to them? Mid-career switches are best done via people who know you.
3. Are you prepared for a long journey?
Sometimes, these pivots may take a while. You might need to be retrained, recertified, rebranded... What's your timeline horizon like?
